    My conception of the perfect government is that of an ogre; massive, lumbering, heavy-fisted and heavy-browed. It comes upon a man and catches him unawares as he returns - wearily - from a hard days work. Lunging from the shadows it strikes him a mighty blow to the face, laying him out cold. The ogre then rifles through the man’s pockets, finds his wallet, and takes out half the cash inside. Tosses the now half empty wallet back down onto the man’s still senseless and prostrate form, and then stalks off to find it’s next victim.

    At the end of the day, when the ogres brigandage is done, it spends that massive pile of money. Never thrifty, no, the ogre spends freely, generously. It spends the money on a welfare system rife with able bodied men who simply don’t want to work. Thanks to the ogres generosity they spend their days in wine and song, and while returning from a nights carousing they may smile at the seeing their neighbors heading off to work. It spends the money on an arts endowment for an artist making a sculpture of Jesus out of monkey dung so that she can afford her next bag of weed. It spends it on a half way house for sex offenders on the same block as a church. On a five year research grant for a study to see if anal sex makes you smarter. On sex-ed and condom machines in high schools, with a choice of flavored or ribbed. On billion dollar boondoggles. On safe injection sites with needle give aways for junkies. It spends on all of these and more, much more, and while it spends it laughs. It laughs long and loud, and rolls it’s beady eyes with glee.

    “On sex-ed and condom machines in high schools, with a choice of flavored or ribbed.”

    It could be worse; it could be spending it on teaching abstinence. It’s one thing to have an ogre steal your money; it’s another for it to be sanctimonious about it.
